Rwanda is called the land of a thousand hills and is today one of the safest and cleanest countries in Africa. The reason people come is unique in the world: to stand a few metres from a family of mountain gorillas. About a thousand remain on earth, and they live only in these mountains.
The kingdom of Rwanda existed from the 15th century. German and then Belgian colonial rule sharpened the divisions that led to the 1994 genocide. The country rebuilt itself at a speed that surprised the world: plastic bags are banned and Kigali is considered the cleanest capital on the continent.
Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking — a special permit is required, limited to a few visitors per day. Nyungwe forest with its chimpanzees and canopy walkway. Lake Kivu for a few restful days. And the Genocide Memorial in Kigali, a visit you do not forget.
The cooking is simple, built on beans, plantain and sweet potato. Brochettes, goat skewers, come with fried plantain. Rwandan coffee is exported worldwide and is worth tasting at its source.
