Kea, which locals call Tzia, is the Cycladic island closest to Attica and at the same time one of the least touristy. It has oak trees instead of bare hills, dry stone walls everywhere, and a capital, Ioulida, built in tiers on a hillside — with no cars in its centre.
The ferry leaves from Lavrio and reaches Korissia in about an hour. It is one of the few lines that allows a same-day return, which is why the island fills with Athenians at weekends. In winter sailings thin out — check them before booking.
In antiquity Kea had four city-states: Ioulida, Karthaia, Poiessa and Korissia. The lyric poet Simonides came from Ioulida. In modern times the Britannic, sister ship of the Titanic, sank off the island in 1916 — today one of the best known wrecks in the Mediterranean for technical diving.
The Lion of Kea, carved into the rock in the 6th century BC, is a ten-minute walk from Ioulida. Ioulida itself, with its vaulted alleys, deserves half a day. Ancient Karthaia, on the south-eastern tip, is reached only on foot in about an hour — and is one of the finest archaeological settings in the Aegean. The island has over 80 kilometres of waymarked trails.
Otzias with its enclosed bay and shallow water, Xyla and Spathi to the north, Koundouros with its windmills to the south-west, and Koutsounaria for quiet.
Local sausage, pasteli, xerotigana and chickpea stew. In Korissia and Vourkari there are good fish tavernas by the water.
Take a car or arrange a taxi in advance — public transport is limited. Summer weekends need early ferry booking, especially if you are bringing a vehicle.
Three days are enough for Ioulida, the Lion, one walk and two beaches. The package includes tickets and accommodation with breakfast.
