Hawaii was settled by Polynesian navigators over a thousand years ago, developing a rich culture. It was an independent kingdom until the end of the 19th century, when it was annexed by the USA, becoming the 50th state in 1959. Its history was also marked by the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.
The Na Pali coast on Kauai, with its dramatic cliffs, is one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. The volcanic national park on the Big Island, Waikiki beach and Pearl Harbor on Oahu, and the Iao Valley on Maui stand out. Surfing and snorkelling are a way of life.
Hawaiian cuisine combines Polynesian, Asian and American influences. Try poke (raw fish with rice), kalua pork, lomi-lomi salmon and the sweet haupia. Tropical fruit and fresh pineapple are everywhere.
Nightlife is concentrated in Waikiki on Oahu, with bars, clubs and traditional luau shows with hula dancing. Evenings often begin with the ritual of the sunset on the beach. The atmosphere is relaxed and festive, with an “aloha” spirit.
