A few words

Guatemala is a country of living indigenous culture, colonial towns, volcanoes and rainforests that conceal great Maya cities. In eight days you combine Antigua, Lake Atitlan, the market of Chichicastenango and the monumental archaeological site of Tikal.

History

The Maya civilisation flourished on Guatemalan soil, with city-states such as Tikal dominating the Classic period between the 3rd and 9th centuries. After the Spanish conquest in the 16th century Antigua became the colonial capital, until the earthquakes of 1773 led to the capital being moved to present-day Guatemala City.

Sights

Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, charms visitors with cobbled streets, colourful houses and the Santa Catalina Arch framed by the Acatenango volcano. Lake Atitlan, ringed by volcanoes and Maya villages such as Santiago Atitlan and San Juan la Laguna, is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. In the northern Peten, the pyramids of Tikal rise above the jungle canopy, while the market of Chichicastenango is the most colourful open-air market in Central America.

Food

Guatemalan cooking is built on corn, beans and rich sauces, with pepian, kak ik and chiles rellenos among the signature dishes. Tortillas accompany almost every meal, and the highland coffee of Antigua is regarded as some of the finest in the world.

Nightlife

Antigua has the liveliest evening scene, with bars set in colonial courtyards, live marimba music and rooftop terraces looking out to the volcanoes. Around Lake Atitlan evenings are more relaxed, with small venues in Panajachel and San Pedro.

Tour's Location

When is the best time to travel?

This is a made-to-order trip, so you choose the dates. We are happy to advise on the best season for this destination and on how the weather, prices and crowds change through the year — just tell us roughly when you are thinking of travelling.

What travel documents do I need?

For destinations outside the European Union you need a passport valid for at least six months beyond your return date, with blank pages for stamping. A national ID card is not accepted. Some countries also require a visa or an electronic travel authorisation to be obtained before departure, and a few ask for specific vaccinations. Entry rules change, so please confirm the current requirements with our office before you book.

What currency is used?

The local currency is Guatemalan Quetzal (GTQ). Cards are widely accepted in cities and hotels, but it is worth carrying some cash for small shops, markets and tips. Tell your bank you are travelling so your card is not blocked.

Can I change the dates or cancel?

Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked for you, so the cost depends on how close to departure you are and on the fare rules of each booking. Tell us as early as possible and we will look for the least costly option. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.

Is travel insurance included?

Travel insurance is not included in the price unless the "Included" list on this page says otherwise. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the EU, so that medical care, cancellation and lost luggage are covered. We can arrange a policy for you — just ask when you book.

Can the trip be customised?

Yes — this is an individual trip, not a group departure. There is no fixed itinerary and no coach schedule: you travel on your own, at your own pace. We can change the number of nights, the class of hotel, add or drop destinations and arrange transfers, car hire or private guides.

How do I book?

Send us a request through the form on this page, call us, or drop by the office. We will come back with availability and a written quotation before anything is charged.
