A few words

Chile stretches for more than four thousand kilometres, from the driest desert on earth to the glaciers of Patagonia. It is a country of extreme contrasts, where a few hours of flying take you from salt flats and volcanoes to granite towers and turquoise lakes. Your individual trip combines its greatest landscapes with comfort and flexibility.

History

Before the Spanish, the north was controlled by the Inca Empire while the south was defended by the Mapuche, who resisted conquest for centuries. Spanish colonisation began in 1541 with the founding of Santiago by Pedro de Valdivia. Independence was won in 1818, and in the 19th century the wealth generated by nitrate and later copper shaped the modern country.

Sights

The Atacama Desert astonishes with the Valley of the Moon, the El Tatio geysers and salt flats dotted with pink flamingos, while its skies are considered among the clearest in the world for stargazing. Valparaiso, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, charms with colourful hills, mural-covered lanes and historic funiculars. In the south, Torres del Paine National Park offers its famous granite towers, the Grey Glacier and guanacos roaming the steppe.

Food

Chilean cuisine is built on the superb seafood of the Pacific, with fresh ceviche, mussels and the celebrated local lobster. Try empanadas filled with beef and olive, pastel de choclo made with sweetcorn, and caldillo de congrio, the fish soup immortalised by Pablo Neruda. The valleys around Santiago produce some of the world’s finest wines, led by Carmenere.

Nightlife

Santiago has a vibrant nightlife, with Bellavista and the Lastarria neighbourhood full of bars, live music venues and restaurants that stay open late. Valparaiso is more bohemian, with small bars on the Alegre and Concepcion hills overlooking the harbour. In Atacama and Patagonia evenings are calmer, spent with a glass of wine by the fireplace or under a spectacular starry sky.

Useful information

The best season for Patagonia and Torres del Paine runs roughly from November to March, the southern hemisphere summer, when days are long and the trails are open. Atacama can be visited year-round, but take care with the altitude and pack layers for the wide temperature swings.

Tour's Location

When is the best time to travel?

This is a made-to-order trip, so you choose the dates. We are happy to advise on the best season for this destination and on how the weather, prices and crowds change through the year — just tell us roughly when you are thinking of travelling.

What is included in the price?

The main inclusions are:

  • Round-trip flights Athens - Santiago - Athens with connections
  • Domestic flights to Calama (Atacama) and Punta Arenas (Patagonia)
  • Accommodation in selected hotels with breakfast
  • Private transfers and guided excursions as per the programme

The full list of what is and is not included appears in the "Included / Excluded" section on this page.

What travel documents do I need?

For destinations outside the European Union you need a passport valid for at least six months beyond your return date, with blank pages for stamping. A national ID card is not accepted. Some countries also require a visa or an electronic travel authorisation to be obtained before departure, and a few ask for specific vaccinations. Entry rules change, so please confirm the current requirements with our office before you book.

What currency is used?

The local currency is Chilean Peso (CLP). Cards are widely accepted in cities and hotels, but it is worth carrying some cash for small shops, markets and tips. Tell your bank you are travelling so your card is not blocked.

Can I change the dates or cancel?

Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked for you, so the cost depends on how close to departure you are and on the fare rules of each booking. Tell us as early as possible and we will look for the least costly option. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.

Is travel insurance included?

Travel insurance is not included in the price unless the "Included" list on this page says otherwise. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the EU, so that medical care, cancellation and lost luggage are covered. We can arrange a policy for you — just ask when you book.

Can the trip be customised?

Yes — this is an individual trip, not a group departure. There is no fixed itinerary and no coach schedule: you travel on your own, at your own pace. We can change the number of nights, the class of hotel, add or drop destinations and arrange transfers, car hire or private guides.

How do I book?

Send us a request through the form on this page, call us, or drop by the office. We will come back with availability and a written quotation before anything is charged. The trip as shown runs for 10 days.
