Andros is the northernmost and one of the greenest of the Cyclades. It looks nothing like the bare Cycladic picture most people carry in their heads: it has running water, ravines, plane trees and dry stone walls dividing the fields. Its Chora is stately, with neoclassical captains’ houses, marble-paved streets and the emblematic Tourlitis, a lighthouse standing alone on a rock in the sea.
The ferry leaves from Rafina and reaches Gavrio in about two hours. There are daily sailings all year, more in summer. Rafina suits travellers coming from the northern suburbs and the airport. Distances on the island are not small — Gavrio to Chora is 35 kilometres — so a car or scooter makes a real difference.
Andros flourished in the 19th and 20th centuries thanks to shipping. The island’s shipowning families built the mansions of Chora and funded schools, libraries and the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation, which brings international exhibitions every summer to an island of just a few thousand residents.
In Chora, the Archaeological Museum, the Maritime Museum and the promenade ending at the Unknown Sailor statue. Inland, Menites with its running water and marble lion heads, Aprovatou with its views, and the Pythara waterfalls near Batsi. Walkers will find more than 100 kilometres of waymarked paths — the Andros Routes — which in 2015 became the first certified trail network in Greece.
Batsi and Chrysi Akti are the most organised. Vitali and Achla, to the north, need a dirt road but reward the effort. Piso Gialia and Zorkos suit those after quiet.
Try fourtalia, an omelette with potatoes and local sausage, kopanisti cheese and spoon sweets. The island also produces good wine from old varieties.
Best season: May-June and September for hiking and swimming together. In August the meltemi wind strengthens on the northern coast. Shops in Chora close early out of season.
Four days are enough for Chora, Batsi, one trail and two or three beaches. The package includes tickets and accommodation with breakfast.
