Frankfurt is Germany’s financial hub, nicknamed “Mainhattan” for its striking skyscraper skyline. Behind the glass towers, though, a rebuilt medieval old town full of half-timbered houses is waiting to be explored.
For centuries Frankfurt was the coronation city of Holy Roman Emperors. The historic Römerberg square, heart of the old town, was destroyed in World War II and faithfully rebuilt afterwards, keeping its medieval appearance.
The Römerberg square with its Römer town hall, St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral, the Städel art museum on the banks of the Main, and the Eiserner Steg footbridge with a panoramic view of the city. For contrast, the top of the Main Tower offers a view over the surrounding skyscrapers.
Try the local green sauce (Grüne Soße) with boiled eggs and potatoes, along with the characteristic Ebbelwoi (apple wine) at the traditional Apfelwein taverns of the Sachsenhausen district.
The Sachsenhausen district, across the river, is full of traditional beer halls and bars for a lively evening.
