A circular loop combining two neighbouring countries without covering the same kilometres twice: you head up from Evzonoi towards Niš, cross into Sofia, come down to Rila and Plovdiv, and return via Promachonas. Ideal for anyone who wants history, mountains and low cost in one week.
Evzonoi → Skopje → Preševo → Niš (E75) → Kalotina border crossing → Sofia → Rila Monastery → Plovdiv → Promachonas → Thessaloniki. The whole route is mostly motorway, apart from the detour to Rila, which is mountainous and scenic. You’ll need a green card for Serbia and North Macedonia, and a vignette for Bulgaria.
Niš is the birthplace of Constantine the Great. Sofia was built over the Roman city of Serdica — its ruins are visible beneath today’s city centre. Rila Monastery, founded in the 10th century by St John of Rila, was the spiritual refuge of the Bulgarian nation through the centuries of Ottoman rule; it’s a UNESCO monument.
The fortress and the Skull Tower in Niš; Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Rotunda of St George and Roman Serdica in Sofia; Rila Monastery with its striped arcades; the Old Town of Plovdiv and its Roman theatre; and mountain-town Bansko as a stop along the way.
In Serbia, grilled meats dominate (ćevapi, pljeskavica) along with kajmak; in Bulgaria, shopska salad, banitsa and yoghurt. In both countries the portions are generous and prices low. Bulgarian wines from Thrace are worth trying, as is rakija on either side of the border.
Sofia has a lively scene around Vitosha Boulevard and the student quarter; Kapana in Plovdiv is one of the most interesting creative districts in the Balkans; and in Niš, Tinkers’ Alley fills up every evening. Everywhere, a night out is inexpensive compared to Greece.
Currencies: Dinar (Serbia), Lev (Bulgaria). Time zone: same as Greece in both. Serbia is outside the EU — a green card and a border check are required. For Bulgaria you’ll need a vignette. Best time to visit: April–October.

As this is a trip in your own car, there is no departure surcharge — you start from wherever suits you.
For your trip within Greece, a valid ID card or passport is enough. If you're travelling by air, you'll need an official photo ID for airport checks. For minors travelling, please check what documentation may be required.
Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked on your behalf, so the cost depends on how close to departure we are and each fare's rules. Let us know as early as possible and we'll look for the least costly solution. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.
Travel insurance is not included in the price unless explicitly stated in the page's inclusions. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the European Union, so that medical care, cancellation and luggage loss are covered. We can arrange it for you — just ask when booking.
