Transylvania is made for a car: medieval walled towns, Saxon fortified churches in every village, and mountain roads considered among the finest in Europe. You get there driving via Bulgaria, no ferry required.
From Thessaloniki you head up via Promachonas to Sofia and continue north towards Ruse, where the bridge over the Danube takes you into Romania. Bucharest makes a sensible first stop; from there the road climbs to Sinaia and Brașov. The famous Transfăgărășan road is only open from late June to October — check before you plan around it. You’ll need a vignette for Romania (the rovinietă, bought at the border or online) and a green card.
Transylvania passed through Hungarian rule, Saxon settlers and Ottoman influence before uniting with Romania in 1918. The Saxons left behind their fortified churches — dozens of them are UNESCO monuments. Bran Castle was commercially linked to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, though the historical Vlad the Impaler barely spent time there; his real seat was Târgoviște.
Brașov, with the Black Church and Council Square; Sibiu, European Capital of Culture, with its “houses with eyes”; Sighișoara, Europe’s only still-inhabited medieval fortified town (UNESCO); Bran Castle and Peleș Castle in Sinaia; and the villages of Viscri and Biertan with their fortified churches.
Hearty and inexpensive: sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls), grilled mici, mămăligă (polenta) with sour cream and cheese, ciorbă soups. In Transylvania, Hungarian influences are strong, with paprika and goulash. Wines from Dealu Mare and țuică (plum brandy) round off the meal.
Bucharest has a lively nightlife, especially in the old town (Lipscani), with bars and clubs open until morning. In Brașov and Sibiu the evening is quieter, in squares with cafés and live music. Prices are among the lowest in Europe.
Currency: Romanian Leu (RON). Time zone: same as Greece. Distance: ~1,100 km from Thessaloniki — allow two days of driving, or one long day with a stop in Sofia. You’ll need a rovinietă (vignette) and a green card. Best time to visit: May–October; the Transfăgărășan only June–October.

As this is a trip in your own car, there is no departure surcharge — you start from wherever suits you.
For your trip within Greece, a valid ID card or passport is enough. If you're travelling by air, you'll need an official photo ID for airport checks. For minors travelling, please check what documentation may be required.
Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked on your behalf, so the cost depends on how close to departure we are and each fare's rules. Let us know as early as possible and we'll look for the least costly solution. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.
Travel insurance is not included in the price unless explicitly stated in the page's inclusions. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the European Union, so that medical care, cancellation and luggage loss are covered. We can arrange it for you — just ask when booking.
