Istria is Croatia’s most “Italian” corner: Venetian bell towers, hilltop villages, truffle-hunting forests, and a Roman amphitheatre right by the sea. By car, you can combine coast and hinterland within the same day.
The route runs via Serbia and Croatia (E75 → Belgrade → Zagreb → Rijeka → Istria), on motorway almost the whole way. Within the peninsula the distances are short: Pula–Rovinj 40 minutes, Rovinj–Motovun an hour. There’s a toll tunnel at Učka. A green card for Serbia; in Croatia you pay regular tolls.
Pula was an important Roman city and retains one of the six best-preserved amphitheatres in the world, built in the 1st century. Istria belonged to Venice for five centuries, and the influence shows everywhere: in the bell towers, the dialect, the cuisine. The Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč, with its 6th-century mosaics, is a UNESCO monument.
Rovinj, with St Euphemia’s church towering above its alleys; the Pula Arena; Motovun and Grožnjan, hilltop fortress villages; the Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč; Brijuni National Park, reached by boat; and the forests of the Mirna Valley, where white truffles are found.
Among the finest cuisines on the Adriatic: truffles in pasta and omelettes, fuži and pljukanci (local pasta shapes), Istrian prosciutto, seafood, and olive oil that wins international awards. Malvazija (white) and Teran (red) wines are the local identity.
Rovinj has atmospheric bars on the rocks with sunset views. Pula is livelier, with concerts and a film festival held inside the Arena each summer. In the inland villages, the evening is spent in taverns with wine and truffles.
Currency: Euro. Time zone: one hour behind Greece. Croatia is in the EU and Schengen; a green card is only needed for Serbia along the route. Distance: ~1,450 km from Thessaloniki. Best time to visit: May–June and September; October–November for white truffle season.

As this is a trip in your own car, there is no departure surcharge — you start from wherever suits you.
For your trip within Greece, a valid ID card or passport is enough. If you're travelling by air, you'll need an official photo ID for airport checks. For minors travelling, please check what documentation may be required.
Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked on your behalf, so the cost depends on how close to departure we are and each fare's rules. Let us know as early as possible and we'll look for the least costly solution. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.
Travel insurance is not included in the price unless explicitly stated in the page's inclusions. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the European Union, so that medical care, cancellation and luggage loss are covered. We can arrange it for you — just ask when booking.
