A few words

Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is one of the most charming, liberal and vibrant metropolises in Europe. Known as the “Venice of the North”, Amsterdam enchants visitors with its unique network of historic canals, protected by UNESCO, and its narrow, colourful houses with their characteristic gabled façades that seem to lean over the water. The city uniquely combines the rich artistic heritage of the Golden Age with a thoroughly modern, eco-friendly and pioneering way of life, in which the bicycle reigns supreme. It is a destination full of vast green parks, world-class museums and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere that sweeps you along from the very first moment.

History

Amsterdam began in the 13th century as a small, obscure fishing village on the banks of the River Amstel, from which it took its name (a dam on the Amstel — Amstel-dam). The city soared during the 17th century, the famous Dutch “Golden Age”, when it became the world’s most important trading and financial centre. This was the era when the great canals were built and the city became a symbol of religious tolerance and freedom of speech, attracting great minds and artists such as Rembrandt. During World War II, the city endured the Nazi occupation and the tragedy of the deportation of its Jewish community. In the post-war decades, Amsterdam reinvented itself, becoming a pioneer in human rights, alternative culture and urban sustainability.

Sights

The tour begins at the central Dam Square, dominated by the magnificent Royal Palace and the New Church (Nieuwe Kerk). Amsterdam is a paradise for art lovers, centred on Museum Square (Museumplein), home to the iconic Rijksmuseum with masterpieces by Rembrandt and Vermeer, the stunning Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum of modern art. One of the most powerful and moving experiences is a visit to the Anne Frank House on the banks of the Prinsengracht canal. Naturally, a cruise along the city’s canals is essential for admiring it from the water. For relaxation, Vondelpark is an earthly paradise within the city, while the trendy, picturesque Jordaan district offers beautiful corners, small galleries and vintage shops away from the crowds.

Food

Dutch cuisine is simple, hearty and perfect for street food. Be sure to try Stroopwafels (two thin waffles sandwiched together with warm caramel syrup), which are utterly delicious eaten warm. The ultimate savoury snack is Bitterballen (crispy, deep-fried croquettes filled with beef or vegetables, served with mustard) and the famous Dutch fries (Patat), served in a paper cone with dozens of sauce options. For the more adventurous, traditional raw herring (Haring) with onion and pickles, sold at open-air stalls, is an authentic local experience. The Netherlands is, of course, famous for its cheeses, so do not miss a tasting of authentic Gouda or Edam at one of the city’s specialist cheese shops, paired with a local Heineken or Amstel beer.

Nightlife

Amsterdam’s nightlife is world-famous, multifaceted and caters to every taste. The action starts in the lively squares of Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein, packed with Irish pubs, cocktail bars, cafés and live music venues. For a more alternative, authentic experience, the De Pijp district offers wonderfully trendy bars and bistros frequented mainly by locals. Amsterdam is also the mecca of electronic and techno music, with legendary clubs such as Paradiso (a former church converted into a concert venue) and Melkweg. Naturally, one of the busiest and most visited parts of the city at night is the famous Red Light District (De Wallen), which is part of the city’s history and distinctive culture.

Useful information

The official currency of the Netherlands is the Euro (€), so transactions are effortless. Important note: Amsterdam is an almost “cashless” city, which means cards (debit/credit) are accepted everywhere, while many shops, and even public transport, do not accept cash at all. The city is one hour behind Greece, and the international dialling code is 0031. Amsterdam is served by Schiphol International Airport (AMS), one of the largest and best-organised airports in the world, around 15 kilometres from the centre. The connection to the city’s Central Station (Amsterdam Centraal) is incredibly easy, fast and cheap, as the airport has its own underground train station with departures every 10 minutes, taking you into the heart of the city in under 15-20 minutes.

Tour's Location

When is the best time to travel?

This is a made-to-order trip, so you choose the dates. We are happy to advise on the best season for this destination and on how the weather, prices and crowds change through the year — just tell us roughly when you are thinking of travelling.

What is included in the price?

The main inclusions are:

  • Flight tickets
  • 1 cabin bag up to 8 kg (and 1 personal item)
  • Airport taxes
  • Fuel surcharges

The full list of what is and is not included appears in the "Included / Excluded" section on this page.

Will the flight be direct?

It depends on the season and the destination. Many trips do have a direct flight, but depending on your dates the airlines may not have a direct connection available for that period, in which case the trip may involve one stopover. We will tell you the exact flight routing clearly in your quote, before you proceed with the booking.

Is the "From €X" price what I'll actually pay?

Not necessarily. The "From €X" price is the lowest price available today, based on current flight and hotel availability for that destination. Because availability changes daily, the final price for your specific dates may differ. We'll send you a firm, written quote before anything is charged, once you tell us the dates you have in mind.

Why does the price change depending on the date?

Flight and hotel prices change daily depending on season, demand, day of the week, and how far in advance you book. That's why the price shown is indicative — the earlier you tell us your dates, the easier it is for us to secure the best possible price.

How much does a single room cost?

The single-room supplement varies by hotel and destination, and is included in the quote you'll receive for your specific dates. If you're travelling alone, let us know from the start so the quote already reflects the correct single-room price.

When do I pay for my trip?

Payment is due in full at the time of booking. For certain hotels that have their own payment policy (for example a deposit or a specific payment deadline), we'll let you know clearly before you proceed, so you know exactly what applies.

If I book now, is the price locked in?

Yes — once your booking is confirmed, the price is fixed and won't be affected by later changes in flight or hotel prices. Availability and price can only change before your booking is finalised.

Is there a surcharge if I depart from a different city?

Several trips offer the option to depart from a city other than Athens (for example Thessaloniki), usually with a small additional charge. If this applies to a specific trip, it will be noted on the page or mentioned when we send your quote. This trip is also available departing from Larnaca (Cyprus) — the flight price difference is calculated in your personal quote.

What travel documents do I need?

For destinations inside the European Union and the Schengen area, Greek citizens travel with a new-type national ID card bearing Latin characters, or with a valid passport. We recommend carrying your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) as well. Minors must carry their own travel document, and a valid driving licence is required if you are hiring a car. Entry rules change, so please confirm the current requirements with us before you book.

Can I change the dates or cancel?

Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked for you, so the cost depends on how close to departure you are and on the fare rules of each booking. Tell us as early as possible and we will look for the least costly option. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.

Is travel insurance included?

Travel insurance is not included in the price unless the "Included" list on this page says otherwise. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the EU, so that medical care, cancellation and lost luggage are covered. We can arrange a policy for you — just ask when you book.

Can the trip be customised?

Yes — this is an individual trip, not a group departure. There is no fixed itinerary and no coach schedule: you travel on your own, at your own pace. We can change the number of nights, the class of hotel, add or drop destinations and arrange transfers, car hire or private guides.

How do I book?

Send us a request through the form on this page, call us, or drop by the office. We will come back with availability and a written quotation before anything is charged. The trip as shown runs for 4 days.
