Salamina is the closest island to Athens and the most misunderstood. Most people think of it as a suburb rather than a destination. Yet it has monasteries, beaches on its western side looking out over the Saronic Gulf, and a name the whole world knows from the sea battle of 480 BC.
By ferry from Perama to Paloukia, every ten minutes, a crossing of just 10 minutes — and you take your car with you. There is also a line from Piraeus to Selinia. It is the easiest “island” destination from Athens.
In the straits of Salamis the battle of 480 BC decided the Persian Wars — Xerxes watched from Mount Aigaleo. The island was also, by tradition, the birthplace of Euripides, and it hosted the last years of the poet Angelos Sikelianos.
The 17th-century Faneromeni Monastery, with striking frescoes of the Last Judgement — among the most important post-Byzantine ensembles in Attica. The Sikelianos house-museum. The cave of Euripides at Peristeria. And the Archaeological Museum at Paloukia.
Kanakia, Peristeria, Saterli and Kolones on the western side — open to the Saronic Gulf and far cleaner than most expect.
Fish tavernas at Selinia and Kanakia, with fresh fish at prices below Athens.
Take your car on the ferry — distances on the island require it. Avoid August weekends, when queues build at the crossing.
