A few words

Milan is the second-largest city in Italy and the capital of the Lombardy region. It is the country’s financial, industrial and commercial centre, recognised worldwide as the ultimate capital of fashion, design and modern lifestyle. Unlike romantic Rome or historic Florence, Milan exudes a faster-paced, more European and refined air. It combines with unrivalled style its impressive Gothic and Renaissance monuments with modern skyscrapers, luxury boutiques and artistic neighbourhoods. It is a city that can satisfy every wish of the visitor in search of top-class shopping, fine gastronomy and a lively, cosmopolitan atmosphere.

History

Founded by the Celts around the 6th century BC and later conquered by the Romans, who named it Mediolanum (the middle of the plain), it even became the capital of the Western Roman Empire. During the Renaissance, Milan enjoyed enormous intellectual and artistic flourishing under the rule of the powerful Visconti and Sforza families, attracting leading creators such as Leonardo da Vinci. In the centuries that followed, it passed under Spanish and Austrian rule before being incorporated into the unified Kingdom of Italy. Despite the destruction it suffered in World War II, it was rebuilt rapidly, becoming the driving force of the Italian economic miracle.

Sights

The city’s ultimate emblem is the Duomo (Duomo di Milano), the magnificent cathedral on the central square, one of the largest and most impressive Gothic churches in the world. It is worth going up to its rooftop terraces to admire the hundreds of marble statues and the panoramic view over the city. Right next door is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a spectacular 19th-century glass-roofed shopping arcade, also known as “Milan’s drawing room”, filled with historic cafés and fashion houses. Passing through the arcade, you reach the famous La Scala opera house (Teatro alla Scala), one of the most celebrated opera theatres in the world. A short distance away stands the Sforza Castle (Castello Sforzesco), which houses important museums and is surrounded by the beautiful Sempione Park. Finally, for a unique artistic experience, the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie is home to Leonardo da Vinci’s famous mural, “The Last Supper” (Il Cenacolo).

Food

Milanese cuisine is rich and refined, and differs from that of southern Italy, being based more on butter, rice and meat than on pasta and tomato. The most classic Milanese speciality is Risotto alla Milanese (an aromatic saffron risotto with its characteristic yellow colour), which often accompanies Ossobuco (slow-braised veal shank). The Cotoletta alla Milanese (breaded veal cutlet fried in butter) is another flavour you will find everywhere. For street food on the go, try the famous Panzerotti (fried dough pockets filled with mozzarella and tomato) from the historic Luini near the Duomo. For something sweet, if you visit during the festive season, Panettone is the traditional Christmas cake that was born here, and any day of the year you can enjoy a premium espresso in one of the city’s elegant cafés.

Nightlife

Nightlife in Milan is synonymous with a unique Italian ritual: the Aperitivo. Every evening after work, the bars fill with people enjoying a Negroni, a Campari or an Aperol Spritz, accompanied by a generous buffet of appetisers. The most popular and atmospheric area for a night out is the Navigli (Milan’s canals), whose banks are lined with countless bars, pubs and restaurants. For a more alternative, artistic and trendy evening, the Brera district offers elegant wine bars and bistros, while the area around Corso Como and Piazza Gae Aulenti is the hub of high-end nightlife, with luxurious cocktail lounges and the city’s most famous clubs for dancing until morning.

Useful information

The currency in Milan is the Euro (€), so no currency exchange is needed for travellers from eurozone countries, and cards are used everywhere. Milan is one hour behind Greece, and Italy’s international dialling code is 0039. Milan is served by three airports. The main international airport, Malpensa (MXP), lies around 50 km to the north-west and is connected to the centre (Cadorna or Milano Centrale station) by the Malpensa Express train. Linate (LIN) airport is the closest to the city (just 8 km) and is directly connected via the new M4 Metro line. Finally, Bergamo (Orio al Serio – BGY) airport is around 45 km away, serves the vast majority of low-cost airlines and is very easily connected to central Milan by express coaches (such as Terravision).

Tour's Location

When is the best time to travel?

This is a made-to-order trip, so you choose the dates. We are happy to advise on the best season for this destination and on how the weather, prices and crowds change through the year — just tell us roughly when you are thinking of travelling.

What is included in the price?

The main inclusions are:

  • Flight tickets
  • 1 cabin bag up to 10 kg (and 1 personal item)
  • Airport taxes
  • Fuel surcharges

The full list of what is and is not included appears in the "Included / Excluded" section on this page.

Will the flight be direct?

It depends on the season and the destination. Many trips do have a direct flight, but depending on your dates the airlines may not have a direct connection available for that period, in which case the trip may involve one stopover. We will tell you the exact flight routing clearly in your quote, before you proceed with the booking.

Is the "From €X" price what I'll actually pay?

Not necessarily. The "From €X" price is the lowest price available today, based on current flight and hotel availability for that destination. Because availability changes daily, the final price for your specific dates may differ. We'll send you a firm, written quote before anything is charged, once you tell us the dates you have in mind.

Why does the price change depending on the date?

Flight and hotel prices change daily depending on season, demand, day of the week, and how far in advance you book. That's why the price shown is indicative — the earlier you tell us your dates, the easier it is for us to secure the best possible price.

How much does a single room cost?

The single-room supplement varies by hotel and destination, and is included in the quote you'll receive for your specific dates. If you're travelling alone, let us know from the start so the quote already reflects the correct single-room price.

When do I pay for my trip?

Payment is due in full at the time of booking. For certain hotels that have their own payment policy (for example a deposit or a specific payment deadline), we'll let you know clearly before you proceed, so you know exactly what applies.

If I book now, is the price locked in?

Yes — once your booking is confirmed, the price is fixed and won't be affected by later changes in flight or hotel prices. Availability and price can only change before your booking is finalised.

Is there a surcharge if I depart from a different city?

Several trips offer the option to depart from a city other than Athens (for example Thessaloniki), usually with a small additional charge. If this applies to a specific trip, it will be noted on the page or mentioned when we send your quote. This trip is also available departing from Larnaca (Cyprus) — the flight price difference is calculated in your personal quote.

What travel documents do I need?

For destinations inside the European Union and the Schengen area, Greek citizens travel with a new-type national ID card bearing Latin characters, or with a valid passport. We recommend carrying your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) as well. Minors must carry their own travel document, and a valid driving licence is required if you are hiring a car. Entry rules change, so please confirm the current requirements with us before you book.

Can I change the dates or cancel?

Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked for you, so the cost depends on how close to departure you are and on the fare rules of each booking. Tell us as early as possible and we will look for the least costly option. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.

Is travel insurance included?

Travel insurance is not included in the price unless the "Included" list on this page says otherwise. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the EU, so that medical care, cancellation and lost luggage are covered. We can arrange a policy for you — just ask when you book.

Can the trip be customised?

Yes — this is an individual trip, not a group departure. There is no fixed itinerary and no coach schedule: you travel on your own, at your own pace. We can change the number of nights, the class of hotel, add or drop destinations and arrange transfers, car hire or private guides.

How do I book?

Send us a request through the form on this page, call us, or drop by the office. We will come back with availability and a written quotation before anything is charged. The trip as shown runs for 4 days.
