The result is that ninety percent of its species exist nowhere else on the planet: a hundred kinds of lemur, chameleons the size of a fingernail and baobab trees that look planted upside down. Your trip is planned individually, with a private guide.
The island was settled late, around 500 AD, by sailors who arrived by canoe from Borneo — which is why the Malagasy language is Austronesian, not African. The Merina kingdom unified the island in the 19th century. France annexed it in 1896 and independence came in 1960.
The Avenue of the Baobabs near Morondava, especially at sunset. Andasibe national park, where the song of the indri lemur carries two kilometres. The stone pinnacles of Tsingy de Bemaraha, a UNESCO site. And Nosy Be in the north, for beaches and diving.
Rice is the base of every meal — Malagasy people eat among the most per head in the world. The national dish romazava is a beef and greens stew. Ravitoto is made with cassava leaves and pork. Madagascar vanilla is considered the finest anywhere.
