Kimolos is the small island next to Milos that kept its own pace. No airport, no large hotels, and even in summer it never sees more than a few thousand visitors. It takes its name from chalk — kimolia — the white earth mined here since antiquity.
By ferry from Piraeus (roughly 5-7 hours depending on the vessel) or — more commonly — on the small ferry from Pollonia on Milos, a 25-minute crossing that runs several times a day in summer. Many travellers combine the two islands in one trip.
Mining chalk and bentonite kept the island alive for centuries. In Chorio the 14th-century Venetian Kastro survives, its houses built wall to wall to form a defensive ring — a plan found on other Cycladic islands as protection against pirates.
Chorio, the only capital, with whitewashed alleys and blue shutters. Skiadi, a mushroom-shaped rock sculpted by the wind, with views over the whole island. The abandoned mine at Gerakas, with reddish and yellow formations. And Ellinika, a submerged ancient settlement visible through the water.
Prassa, with its turquoise shallows, is the best known. Bonatsa and Aliki are easy to reach. Dekas and Mavrospilia need a short walk or a boat, and repay it.
Ladenia, the local flatbread with tomato and onion, is the signature dish. Also try manoura, a cheese matured in wine, and fresh fish at Psathi.
The island is small but walking distances tire you in the sun — a scooter helps. In July and August book accommodation early, as beds are few.
Four days allow for Chorio, Skiadi and three or four beaches. The package includes tickets and accommodation with breakfast.
