Honduras uniquely combines the ancient Maya world with the Caribbean: on one side the exquisite carved stelae of Copan, on the other the turquoise waters of the island of Roatan. Seven days are enough to discover both faces of the country at a comfortable pace.
Copan was one of the most important Maya cities of the Classic period, celebrated for the artistic refinement of its sculpture and for the Hieroglyphic Stairway, the longest known inscription of the Maya civilisation. Roatan and the other Bay Islands passed from Spanish to British hands and sheltered pirates before being definitively incorporated into Honduras, retaining to this day their English-speaking Garifuna and Creole heritage.
At Copan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the highlights are the Acropolis, Temple 16 with Altar Q, and the surrounding forest with its brightly coloured scarlet macaws. The neighbouring village of Copan Ruinas is a pleasure to explore on foot, while Roatan offers West Bay and Sandy Bay beaches and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest coral reef system in the world, with outstanding diving and snorkelling.
Honduran cooking centres on baleadas, tortillas filled with beans and cheese, grilled meats and tropical fruit. Along the coast and on Roatan seafood dominates, along with the Garifuna coconut soup, and the country’s highland coffee is excellent.
On Roatan evenings are spent in the beachfront bars of West End, with live reggae and punta music and sunsets over the sea. In Copan Ruinas the atmosphere is quieter, with small cafes and bars around the central square.

Several trips offer the option to depart from a city other than Athens (for example Thessaloniki), usually with a small additional charge. If this applies to a specific trip, it will be noted on the page or mentioned when we send your quote.
For this destination, Greek/EU citizens do not need a visa for a tourist visit — a valid passport is enough, usually with at least six months' validity remaining after your return date. The local currency is Honduran Lempira (HNL). Cards are widely accepted in cities and hotels, but it is worth carrying some cash for small shops, markets and tips. Tell your bank you are travelling so your card is not blocked.
