The Faroe Islands are 18 volcanic islands in the North Atlantic, between Scotland and Iceland, with green mountains dropping straight into the sea and villages with grass-roofed houses.
The monk Dicuil mentioned the islands as early as the 9th century. Norwegian Vikings settled here and founded one of the world’s oldest parliaments, the Løgting, in 900 AD. Today a Danish possession with broad autonomy.
The village of Gásadalur, with the Múlafossur waterfall plunging straight into the ocean. Lake Sørvágsvatn, which appears to “float” above the sea in photos. Tórshavn, one of the world’s smallest capitals. And the Vestmanna bird cliffs.
Dried lamb (skerpikjøt), hung to cure in traditional sheds. Fresh fish every day — cod, salmon. And warm lamb soup on cold days.
