An individual touring holiday that links Lisbon with Porto, taking in the fairy-tale palaces of Sintra and the vineyards of the Douro Valley. This is not a single-city break but a journey from the Atlantic coast to the rivers of northern Portugal. Your car gives you the freedom to stop wherever the landscape wins you over.
Portugal emerged as an independent kingdom in the 12th century and became Europe’s first great maritime empire during the Age of Discovery. Vasco da Gama and Henry the Navigator opened routes to India, Brazil and Africa, bringing a wealth reflected in the Manueline style of architecture. The devastating earthquake of 1755 rebuilt Lisbon, while in 1974 the Carnation Revolution brought democracy peacefully.
In Lisbon the highlights are the Belem Tower, the Jeronimos Monastery, the Alfama district with tram 28 and Sao Jorge Castle. Sintra impresses with the colourful Pena Palace and the mysterious Quinta da Regaleira, while nearby lies Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe. In Porto you will see the Lello bookshop, Sao Bento station and the port lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia, with the Douro Valley as a grand finale.
Salt cod, the famous bacalhau, is prepared in hundreds of ways, while grilled sardines and seafood dominate the Atlantic taverns. In Porto try the hearty francesinha sandwich and in Lisbon the warm pasteis de nata dusted with cinnamon. The country’s wines, from light vinho verde to port itself, accompany every meal perfectly.
In Lisbon the evening begins with fado in Alfama and continues in the bars of Bairro Alto and the riverside Cais do Sodre. In Porto the Ribeira district and Galeria de Paris street fill with people until late. Everywhere the atmosphere is relaxed, friendly and especially lively in the summer months.

For destinations inside the European Union and the Schengen area, Greek citizens travel with a new-type national ID card bearing Latin characters, or with a valid passport. We recommend carrying your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) as well. Minors must carry their own travel document, and a valid driving licence is required if you are hiring a car. Entry rules change, so please confirm the current requirements with our office before you book.
The local currency is Euro (EUR). Cards are widely accepted in cities and hotels, but it is worth carrying some cash for small shops, markets and tips. Tell your bank you are travelling so your card is not blocked.
Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked for you, so the cost depends on how close to departure you are and on the fare rules of each booking. Tell us as early as possible and we will look for the least costly option. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.
Travel insurance is not included in the price unless the "Included" list on this page says otherwise. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the EU, so that medical care, cancellation and lost luggage are covered. We can arrange a policy for you — just ask when you book.
