Ethiopia is the only African country never colonised, with its own alphabet, its own calendar (7-8 years behind ours) and a religious tradition tracing back to King Solomon. In Lalibela, eleven churches are carved whole out of solid rock.
The Kingdom of Axum was one of the great ancient empires, with its own coinage and obelisks. Christianity arrived in the 4th century, earlier than in many European states. Ethiopia resisted Italian invasion, apart from a brief 1936-41 occupation.
The eleven monolithic churches of Lalibela, carved in the 12th century, a UNESCO site. The stelae of Axum. The Omo Valley with its traditional tribes. And the Danakil Depression, the hottest inhabited place on Earth, with active mud volcanoes.
Injera, a sour, spongy flatbread that doubles as plate and cutlery. Wat, a spicy meat or lentil stew. And the traditional coffee ceremony — Ethiopia is considered the birthplace of coffee.

Ethiopia requires a visa, which is easily obtained online before travel through the official e-Visa portal (evisa.gov.et). Make sure to arrange it before departure, along with a passport valid for at least six months.
