Sri Lanka’s history stretches back more than two millennia, to the Buddhist kingdoms of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa and their remarkable irrigation systems. In the 5th century AD King Kasyapa built his palace atop the rock of Sigiriya, while Kandy remained the last independent kingdom until 1815. Portuguese, Dutch and British rule each left their mark before the island gained independence in 1948.
The Lion Rock of Sigiriya with its famous frescoes, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy and the cave temples of Dambulla form the celebrated Cultural Triangle. In the highlands, the train to Ella crosses the tea estates of Nuwara Eliya and the Nine Arches Bridge. In the south you will find Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the beaches of Mirissa and Unawatuna.
Sri Lankan cuisine is fragrant and generous, built around rice served with many small curries of vegetables, fish or chicken cooked in coconut milk. Be sure to try hoppers, street-side kottu roti and fresh coconut sambol. Ceylon tea, mild or strong, accompanies every hour of the day.
Nightlife here is relaxed and unpretentious, with Colombo offering the country’s most cosmopolitan rooftop bars and restaurants. On the southern beaches, in Mirissa and Unawatuna, beach bars set their tables right on the sand with live music. In the highlands evenings are quieter, perfect for a drink overlooking the valley.
The best season for the west and south coasts runs from December to April, while the east coast is at its finest from May to September. Distances are short in kilometres but slow in travel time, which is exactly why a private car with driver makes all the difference.
