Oman is perhaps the most authentic destination on the Arabian Peninsula, with vast deserts, imposing mountains and famously hospitable people. Unlike its neighbours it keeps its buildings low and its traditional character strong. In seven days you will discover Muscat, Nizwa, the Wahiba Sands dunes, Jebel Akhdar and the fjords of Musandam.
For centuries Oman was a major maritime power, with trade networks reaching East Africa and India. Zanzibar was for a long period part of the sultanate. The modern era began in 1970, when the country opened to the world while preserving its cultural identity.
The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat impresses with its marble architecture and enormous handwoven carpet. Nizwa, with its round fort and traditional souq, is the historic heart of the country. The orange dunes of the Wahiba Sands, the terraced slopes of Jebel Akhdar and the fjords of Musandam make up landscapes of rare beauty.
Omani cuisine blends Arab, Indian and African influences, scented with cardamom, saffron and rosewater. Shuwa, lamb marinated and slow-roasted, is the most emblematic dish, while fresh fish from the Gulf of Oman is served everywhere. Arabic coffee with dates is always offered as a sign of hospitality.
Evenings in Oman are relaxed and family-oriented, centring on the souqs, the cafes and strolls along the Mutrah waterfront. Alcohol is served mainly in hotels and licensed restaurants and bars. The most authentic evening experience is dinner at a desert camp beneath a sky full of stars.
