Greenland is the world’s largest island, 80% covered in ice, with brightly painted fishing villages tucked between icebergs and fjords. Its capital, Nuuk, is the world’s smallest capital city.
The Inuit arrived roughly 4,500 years ago. The Norwegian Erik the Red named it “Green Land” in 986 AD to attract settlers. A Danish possession since the 18th century, today it is an autonomous region of the Kingdom of Denmark.
The Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO site where icebergs are “born.” Nuuk, with its National Museum and the Qilakitsoq mummies. Dog-sledding excursions. And the Northern Lights in the winter months.
Seal and whale meat traditionally, though fish is more common today — cod, shrimp and halibut. Suaasat, a traditional meat soup. And Danish coffee with smørrebrød.
June to August for mild weather and the midnight sun, September to March for the Northern Lights.
