Cyprus is the most familiar of overseas destinations for Greek travellers, yet an island with a character entirely its own. In six days by car you cross the whole island, from Nicosia and Limassol to Paphos, the Troodos mountains and Ayia Napa. Sea, mountains, Byzantine monuments and warm Cypriot hospitality alternate day after day.
The island has been continuously inhabited for more than ten thousand years and was in turn Mycenaean, Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine, Frankish, Venetian and Ottoman territory, before passing to British administration and gaining independence in 1960. Every ruler left a mark: the mosaics of Roman Nea Paphos, the Byzantine monasteries of Troodos, the Venetian walls of Nicosia. The tragedy of 1974 and the division of the island remain a living part of modern Cypriot history.
In Nicosia the highlights are the Venetian walls, Ledra Street, the Cyprus Museum and the church of Saint John. Paphos holds the famous mosaics of its Archaeological Park, the Tombs of the Kings and Petra tou Romiou, while Limassol offers its medieval castle and ancient Kourion with a theatre overlooking the sea. In Troodos you will find the UNESCO-listed painted churches, Kykkos Monastery and the wine villages, while Ayia Napa and Cape Greco offer the clearest beaches on the island.
Cypriot cooking is generous and deeply Mediterranean, and its finest expression is the meze, an endless procession of small dishes. Try souvlaki in pita, kleftiko, afelia, village sausage and grilled halloumi, taramas and koupepia. The Troodos villages serve palouze and soutzoukos, while the wine villages above Limassol produce excellent wines and the celebrated Commandaria.
Limassol has the most cosmopolitan nightlife, with bars along the marina and in the old town. Ayia Napa is famous for its clubs and beach bars, while Nicosia offers a more relaxed, authentic scene in the lanes around Faneromeni and Ledra. In Paphos the evening gathers around the little harbour, with tavernas and bars at the water’s edge.
Cyprus is a member state of the European Union and Greek is the spoken language, which makes travelling here especially easy. Note one important difference: in Cyprus traffic drives on the left. Currency: Euro· Time: same as Greece· Arrival airport: Larnaca (LCA) or Paphos (PFO).

For destinations inside the European Union and the Schengen area, Greek citizens travel with a new-type national ID card bearing Latin characters, or with a valid passport. We recommend carrying your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) as well. Minors must carry their own travel document, and a valid driving licence is required if you are hiring a car. Entry rules change, so please confirm the current requirements with our office before you book.
The local currency is Euro. Cards are widely accepted in cities and hotels, but it is worth carrying some cash for small shops, markets and tips. Tell your bank you are travelling so your card is not blocked.
Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked for you, so the cost depends on how close to departure you are and on the fare rules of each booking. Tell us as early as possible and we will look for the least costly option. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.
Travel insurance is not included in the price unless the "Included" list on this page says otherwise. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the EU, so that medical care, cancellation and lost luggage are covered. We can arrange a policy for you — just ask when you book.
