The heartland of Maya civilisation for centuries, with cities like Caracol home to as many as 140,000 people at their peak. A British colony (British Honduras) from the 17th century, independent since 1981.
The Great Blue Hole, a huge marine sinkhole visible from above, a UNESCO site. The Xunantunich and Caracol ruins deep in the jungle. Caye Caulker, a car-free island ideal for diving. And the ATM cave (Actun Tunichil Muknal) with ancient Maya remains.
