Bavaria is the Germany of fairy tales: castles perched on crags, alpine lakes, walled medieval towns and beer halls full of life. This six-day road trip is not a Munich city break but a tour of the whole region, from the Alps and Neuschwanstein to the Romantic Road and Rothenburg. It suits couples and families who want to combine nature, history and comfort.
Bavaria was for centuries an independent duchy and later a kingdom under the House of Wittelsbach, before joining the German Empire in 1871. King Ludwig II, the so-called mad king, built the romantic castles that became the symbol of the region in the nineteenth century. The towns of the Romantic Road, foremost among them Rothenburg ob der Tauber, preserve their medieval cores almost intact.
Munich offers Marienplatz with the town hall glockenspiel, Nymphenburg Palace, the Pinakothek galleries and the English Garden. Neuschwanstein Castle and neighbouring Hohenschwangau are among the most famous in Europe, while Garmisch-Partenkirchen leads by cog railway and cable car to the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak. On the Romantic Road the highlights are walled Rothenburg, Dinkelsbuhl and the Residenz palace at Wurzburg.
Bavarian cooking is hearty and extremely welcoming. Try roast pork knuckle Schweinshaxe, white Weisswurst sausages with sweet mustard, pretzels and Knodel dumplings, while in the alpine villages Kaiserschmarrn is the most enjoyable of desserts. Munich’s beer halls and beer gardens, the Hofbrauhaus above all, are an experience in themselves.
In Munich the evening begins in the beer gardens and continues in the bars of the Glockenbach and Schwabing districts. In Garmisch and the alpine resorts entertainment is more traditional, with live music in wood-panelled taverns. Rothenburg offers quiet evenings, enlivened by the charming Night Watchman’s tour through the medieval town.
Motorways are excellent and toll-free for private cars, though the historic centres of many towns are pedestrianised. For Neuschwanstein, booking your entry ticket well in advance is recommended, as places are limited. Currency: Euro· Time: one hour behind Greece· Arrival airport: Munich (MUC).

The full list of what is and is not included appears in the "Included / Excluded" section on this page.
For destinations inside the European Union and the Schengen area, Greek citizens travel with a new-type national ID card bearing Latin characters, or with a valid passport. We recommend carrying your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) as well. Minors must carry their own travel document, and a valid driving licence is required if you are hiring a car. Entry rules change, so please confirm the current requirements with our office before you book.
The local currency is Euro. Cards are widely accepted in cities and hotels, but it is worth carrying some cash for small shops, markets and tips. Tell your bank you are travelling so your card is not blocked.
Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked for you, so the cost depends on how close to departure you are and on the fare rules of each booking. Tell us as early as possible and we will look for the least costly option. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.
Travel insurance is not included in the price unless the "Included" list on this page says otherwise. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the EU, so that medical care, cancellation and lost luggage are covered. We can arrange a policy for you — just ask when you book.
Yes — this is an individual trip, not a group departure. There is no fixed itinerary and no coach schedule: you travel on your own, at your own pace. We can change the number of nights, the class of hotel, add or drop destinations and arrange transfers, car hire or private guides.
Send us a request through the form on this page, call us, or drop by the office. We will come back with availability and a written quotation before anything is charged. The trip as shown runs for 6 days.
