Bosnia is one of the most underrated destinations in the Balkans, and one of the most moving. Ottoman bazaars, a bridge that became a symbol, and a capital where a mosque, a synagogue, a Catholic and an Orthodox church stand just steps apart. You get there driving, no ferry needed.
The most scenic route runs via Albania and Montenegro (Kakavia → Tirana → Shkodra → Podgorica → Trebinje) and enters Bosnia from the south, reaching Mostar. Alternatively, via Serbia on the E75. The roads are mostly secondary, with many bends — allow time and drive in daylight. A green card is essential; Bosnia is outside the EU.
The Mostar Bridge (Stari Most), built in 1566 by the Ottoman architect Mimar Hajruddin, was destroyed in 1993 and rebuilt in 2004 using the original techniques; it’s a UNESCO monument and a symbol of reconciliation. Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics and endured the longest siege of a city in modern history (1992–1996). It was also where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914.
Stari Most and the Kujundžiluk bazaar in Mostar; Blagaj, a dervish tekke built at the foot of a cliff by the source of the Buna river; medieval Počitelj; the Kravice waterfalls; in Sarajevo, Baščaršija, the Latin Bridge, the Clock Tower and the Tunnel of Hope.
Ottoman heritage on the plate: ćevapi with somun bread and onion, spiral-shaped burek, dolma, and the famous Bosnian coffee served in a copper džezva with Turkish delight. Prices are very low. In Muslim areas alcohol is more discreet, but rakija is available everywhere.
Sarajevo’s Baščaršija fills up every evening, with cafés, restaurants and live sevdah music. Mostar is quieter, with bars along the Neretva river and views of the illuminated bridge. Everywhere, the atmosphere is friendly and safe.
Currency: Convertible Mark (BAM), pegged to the euro. Time zone: one hour behind Greece. The country is outside the EU: passport or ID card and a green card required. Distance: ~900 km from Ioannina via Albania-Montenegro. Best time to visit: May–June and September–October.

As this is a trip in your own car, there is no departure surcharge — you start from wherever suits you.
For your trip within Greece, a valid ID card or passport is enough. If you're travelling by air, you'll need an official photo ID for airport checks. For minors travelling, please check what documentation may be required.
Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked on your behalf, so the cost depends on how close to departure we are and each fare's rules. Let us know as early as possible and we'll look for the least costly solution. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.
