Ohrid is one of the closest “foreign” destinations for northern Greece, and one of the most rewarding: a lake millions of years old, Byzantine churches with rare frescoes, and prices that allow for a truly relaxed holiday. By car it combines easily with Skopje and Mavrovo National Park.
From Florina you cross at the Niki border (Medžitlija) and in just over an hour you’re in Ohrid via Bitola. Alternatively, from Evzonoi you head up to Skopje and then west. The roads are good, with stretches of motorway. You’ll need a green card, as the country is outside the EU.
Ohrid was the spiritual centre of the Slavic world: here St Clement, a disciple of Cyril and Methodius, founded a school that taught thousands of students in the 9th–10th centuries. The town and the lake are together a UNESCO site, for both culture and nature. It’s said to have once had 365 churches — one for every day of the year.
St John at Kaneo, perched above the lake — the town’s iconic image; Hagia Sophia and St Clement’s Church with their frescoes; Tsar Samuil’s Fortress; St Naum Monastery on the southern shore; Matka Canyon near Skopje; and Mavrovo National Park along the way.
The cuisine is Balkan with Greek and Turkish influences: tavče gravče (baked beans), grilled meats, ajvar, cheeses, and trout from Lake Ohrid. Prices are among the lowest in Europe. Tikveš wines offer excellent value for money.
In Ohrid, evenings are spent along the lakefront and in the alleys of the old town, with bars and taverns overlooking the lake — lively yet calm. Skopje has a more urban scene, with the Old Bazaar (Čaršija) and bars around the centre.
Currency: Denar (MKD). Time zone: one hour behind Greece. Border: Niki–Medžitlija (Florina) or Evzonoi. The country is outside the EU: you’ll need an ID card or passport and a green card. Best time to visit: May–October; in August the lake gets busy and lively.

As this is a trip in your own car, there is no departure surcharge — you start from wherever suits you.
For your trip within Greece, a valid ID card or passport is enough. If you're travelling by air, you'll need an official photo ID for airport checks. For minors travelling, please check what documentation may be required.
Changes and cancellations follow the terms of the airlines, hotels and suppliers booked on your behalf, so the cost depends on how close to departure we are and each fare's rules. Let us know as early as possible and we'll look for the least costly solution. The general terms of participation apply to every booking.
Travel insurance is not included in the price unless explicitly stated in the page's inclusions. We strongly recommend it, especially for trips outside the European Union, so that medical care, cancellation and luggage loss are covered. We can arrange it for you — just ask when booking.
