A trip to Cairo is a life-changing experience. The largest city in Egypt and in all of Africa awaits you with the most impressive archaeological wonders in the world, living traditions and an energy you will find nowhere else. From the imposing Pyramids of Giza to the banks of the legendary Nile, every corner of the city tells stories thousands of years old.

Waiting to be discovered are the alleys with their colourful souvenirs and the aromas of the fabled bazaars, while authentic Egyptian cuisine will intoxicate your senses. Even if Cairo is not always easy, it is essential — a city that combines the ancient with the modern in a harmony that is simply magical. Get ready to step into a world from another era.

Cairo is a city that captivates and challenges you at the same time. For me, its allure began in childhood, when I visited a friend who lived there. I have walked its streets many times since, and each time the city manages to enchant me all over again. The contrast between modern life and the history that flows from every corner is striking: from the bustling bazaars to the minarets that dominate the skyline, and from the historic Belle Époque buildings to the traditional working-class apartment blocks.

Cairo is home to more than 21 million people, and the city’s energy is felt from the very first moment. You can fly just an hour and a half from Athens, and yet the experience transports you to another world. It is the ideal destination for those who want to combine cultural tourism, thousands of years of history and modern life. If you have the time, it is worth pairing your trip with Upper Egypt — Luxor and Aswan — for a complete Egyptian experience.

The heart of the city is full of contrasts: old Cairo with its narrow lanes and bazaars, the minarets and the squares, alongside the new districts such as New Cairo and New Festival City, home to modern malls, offices and Western-style apartment blocks. This tension between the old and the new makes Cairo unique.

Egypt also charms you through its people. Despite the hardships and the everyday poverty, Egyptians are hospitable, warm and always ready to help. Their expressions are often accompanied by words of optimism: “God will provide”, a reminder that life flows differently in this place.

Cairo’s architecture is equally captivating. From the striking Art Deco and Belle Époque buildings to the tiled houses and traditional apartment blocks, the city is a living canvas of history and culture. Modern urban planning coexists with monuments centuries old, creating a unique landscape that inspires both awe and curiosity.

Egypt’s archaeological treasures are, of course, world-class: the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, the museums with their statues and sarcophagi — all telling stories thousands of years old. Visiting these monuments allows you to grasp the development and wisdom of a civilisation that still enchants the modern world.

Coptic Cairo offers a different experience: monasteries, churches and historic buildings that bear witness to the region’s Christian heritage. The narrow lanes and historic monuments make up a unique setting for walking and exploring.

If you visit Cairo, do not miss:

  • Seeing the pyramids at Giza and the Sahara, and exploring the desert by camel.
  • Devoting time to the Archaeological Museum and discovering the exhibits that keep the history of the Pharaohs alive.
  • Taking a felucca ride on the Nile, ideally at sunset.
  • Strolling through Zamalek and admiring the Art Deco buildings and the neighbourhoods where they coexist with traditional houses.
  • Visiting the Khan el-Khalili bazaar and enjoying a coffee or tea in historic cafés such as Fishawi’s.

What to watch out for:

  • Prices in restaurants may include additional taxes, so it is important to agree the cost before you order.
  • Always leave a tip; it is greatly appreciated.
  • Be careful with food, water and ice, for reasons of hygiene.
  • In taxis, always agree the route and the fare in advance.
  • Respect the customs of the region: avoid shorts or short-sleeved tops.

Cairo is a city that grips you, carries you away and fills you with images and experiences that are hard to forget. It is a journey that combines history, life, people and culture, all in an unrivalled setting of contrasts and beauty.
