The First Stops: Megalo and Mikro Papigo
Our journey begins in Western Zagori and the famous villages of Megalo and Mikro Papigo. As you approach, the imposing Towers of Astraka – the massive rock formations rising above Mikro Papigo – will take your breath away. In Megalo Papigo, you will walk along stone-paved alleys (kalderimia), admire the traditional architecture of Epirus, and enjoy a warm coffee at one of the picturesque cafes.
Between the two villages, do not miss a stop at the Kolymbithres. These are natural pools formed in the rocks by the water flow of the Rogovo stream. In the summer, the more adventurous can enjoy a refreshing swim, while in autumn and winter, the scenery resembles a beautiful painting.
The Heart of Central Zagori: Monodendri and Vikos
Continuing our road trip towards Central Zagori, Monodendri stands out as one of the most popular stops. From here, you can follow the short path leading to the Monastery of Agia Paraskevi, built literally on the edge of the cliff, offering breathtaking views of the Vikos Gorge.
For the most stunning view of the gorge – which is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the deepest gorge in proportion to its width – drive to the Oxya viewpoint. The route passes through the Stone Forest, a unique geological formation of limestone layers that look like stone trees.
The Architectural Gems: Dilofo and Tsepelovo
If you want to feel as though time has stopped, take the turn towards Dilofo. Cars are not allowed inside this village, preserving the absolute peace and authenticity of the landscape. The grand mansions and the central square with its massive plane tree will transport you to a bygone era.
Tsepelovo, the largest village in Zagori, is another excellent stop. With a rich history and strong cultural heritage, it offers beautiful stone alleys, traditional guesthouses, and excellent dining options, where you can taste the famous savory pies of Epirus.
The Historic Stone Bridges of Zagori
No road trip to Zagorochoria is complete without visiting the legendary stone bridges of the region. These masterpieces of folk architecture were built during the 18th and 19th centuries to connect the villages.
- Kokkoris (or Noutsos) Bridge: A highly impressive, single-arched bridge standing between two vertical cliffs over the Voidomatis River.
- Plakidas (or Kalogeriko) Bridge: A rare three-arched bridge, famous for its wavy appearance, resembling a caterpillar moving across the river.
